Medical science in the Late Middle Ages saw humankind as an integral part of the cosmos. It was believed that conditions could be diagnosed and cured through the application of astronomy and astrology. Manuscripts and prints surviving from these fields of science include not only written texts, but also painted and printed depictions and diagrams that give us an insight into how the world was perceived, how conditions were diagnosed and how patients were treated.
The exhibition “Of bodies and stars – Medicine and astronomy in the Late Medieval collections at LMU University Library” draws on Late Medieval manuscripts and early prints from the annals of the University Library to showcase the links between medicine and astronomy.
The exhibition took shape from a project by students attending the Munich History Lectures under the guidance of Dr. Tobias Daniels and Dr. Paul Schweitzer-Martin, in collaboration with the LMU University Library.
